TOMPKINS WAYNESBORO - Vyrl Alvena Tompkins, 84, of Summit Square, 501 Oak Ave., Waynesboro, Va., died Thursday, Feb. 19, 2004, after a long illness. She was born Oct. 13, 1919, in Covington, Tenn., the youngest of nine children born to William Dennis and Sara Leticia Black. In addition to her parents, brothers and sisters, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, David Ashley "Tommy" Tomkins on Feb. 19, 1990. She is survived by two daughters and their families, a daughter, Pam Huggins and her husband, Jim, of Staunton, Va., Sally Huggins Toner and her husband, Mark, great granddaughters, Aimee and Sara, all of Reston, Va.; granddaughters, Kathryn Ashley and Jamie Elizabeth Huggins of Staunton, Va.; a daughter, Tommie C. Whitley and her husband, Joel, of Maui, Hawaii; a granddaughter, Pamela Whitley Hexter and her husband, Joe, grandsons, Michael, Matthew and Christopher, all of Frederick, Md.; a grandson, David Boyce Whitley of Williamsburg, Va. She will be missed by a nephew, Landon Beasley of Covington, Tenn., and special caring friends, Barbara Absher and Joyce Swaim. The family wishes to express their love and heartfelt appreciation to the staff at Summit Square for their sensitivity and loving care and to Dr. Laura Jean Brand and Christopher Heck for their support. Vyrl was an adoring wife, mother and "Meemaw" with an unselfish heart who gave her love freely and completely. A private family service of remembrance will be held at a later date.
