WINSTON-SALEM -- Elizabeth Roberta Gilmour Lake, a resident of Arbor Acres, Winston-Salem, NC, USA, died at the Fitzgerald Health Center on Thursday, November 28, 2002.
Mrs. Lake was born in Chester, SC, USA on March 20, 1912. She was the daughter of The Reverend Dr. Abram David Pollock Gilmour and Elizabeth Monroe Taylor Gilmour. Mrs. Lake grew up in Wilmington, NC, USA; she attended Converse College in Spartanburg, SC, USA and spent one year of study abroad at the Sorbonne in Paris, France.
Mrs. Lake married The Reverend Dr. Julian Lake on December 28, 1933. They were married for 65 years. Dr. Lake died on November 3, 1999. Mrs. Lake was a longtime member of The National Society of the Colonial Dames of America, the Sorosis Club, and was honored as a Lifetime Member of the Women of the First Presbyterian Church of Winston-Salem.
She and Dr. Lake served the Warrenton Presbyterian Church in Warrenton, VA, USA; Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church in Rock Hill, SC, USA; First Presbyterian Church in Bristol, TN, USA; First Presbyterian Church in Winston-Salem, NC, USA; Brownson Memorial Presbyterian Church in Southern Pines, NC, USA; and Shandon Presbyterian Church in Columbia, SC, USA until his retirement in Winston-Salem in 1972. After Dr. Lake's retirement, they served seven interim pastorates throughout the southeast.
Mrs. Lake grandparents and parents were instrumental in the establishment of the Montreat Presbyterian Conference Center in Montreat, NC, USA. It is here where the Lakes built the Gilmour-Lake home "Edgemont" that has been a beloved family gathering place for many generations.
A son, the Reverend Robert Janney Lake, and two brothers, Monroe Taylor Gilmour and Matthew Pollock Gilmour preceded Mrs. Lake in death.
Mrs. Lake is survived by her children , Julian Gilmour Lake and spouse Nancy Ball Lake, Elizabeth " Betty" Lake Orr and spouse Richard Graham Orr of Winston-Salem, and Margaret Scott "Scottie" Lake Lindsay and spouse The Reverend Scott Lindsay of Charlotte; her grandchildren, London Lake Pickett of Winston-Salem, Lydia Sheppard Lake of Falls Church, VA, USA, Charles Lamb Cauthen, Jr., Elizabeth Gilmour McLean and Catherine Lake Cauthen all of Charlotte, NC, USA, Dr. Robert Scott Lake of Daniel Island, SC, USA, Julia Lake Shealy of Atlanta, GA, USA, David Scott Lindsay Jr., of Clinton, SC, USA, Sarah Lindsay Balsley of Atlanta, GA, USA and Margaret Lee Lindsay of Charlotte, NC, USA. Also surviving are seven great grandchildren.
A family graveside service will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Monday, December 2, 2002 at Forsyth Memorial Park. A memorial service will follow at 3:00 P.M. at First Presbyterian Church in Winston-Salem. The family will remain after the service to receive friends. Memorials may be made to the Julian and Robert Lake Scholarship Fund at Davidson College, the Robert Lake Fund at the First Presbyterian Church in Winston-Salem, or the Mountain Retreat Association in Montreat, NC, USA earmarked for the Robert Lake Park.
Vogler and Son's Reynolda Road Chapel is serving the family of Mrs. Lake.
