Deceased Name: JOHN EDWARD BOYD , S&L EXECUTIVE
A number of Charlotteans own their homes instead of renting because of the
compassion of John Edward Boyd, who died Monday, June 1, 1987, at Presbyterian Hospital. He was 75.
''John was a champion for the little guy. A lot of people that probably couldn't have bought a home under normal circumstances were able to because of John's efforts to work it out,'' says Joe King, president of Home Federal Savings and Loan of Charlotte.
Mr. Boyd, a Charlotte native, started working as a teller at Home Federal in 1933 after graduating from Davidson College. He rose to senior vice president, and when he retired in 1981, he was elected chairman of the S&L's board of directors.
Because of the Depression ''1933 was a trying time for financial institutions,'' King noted. ''They let John work on a week-to-week basis before they decided to make him a full-time employee.'' ''He was a real Southern gentleman in the classic sense,'' King said. ''He thought that there was a proper way to do most things, and he adhered to that.''
Mr. Boyd of 5630 Timber Ln. was a U.S. Army veteran who served in both the European and Pacific theaters. He was a member of Sardis Presbyterian Church, where he designed and maintained the Cloister Garden.
Survivors are his wife, Mary Elizabeth Brantley Boyd; daughter, Mrs. Mary Abernathy of Matthews; and four grandchildren.
Funeral is 11 a.m. Wednesday at Sardis Presbyterian Church. Burial is in the church cemetery. Harry and Bryant Funeral Home is in charge. Memorials can be made to the Cloister Garden, care of Sardis Presbyterian Church, 6100 Sardis Rd., Charlotte, N.C. 28226. Visitation is 7 to 8:30 tonight at Harry and Bryant.
