Notes |
- For the purpose of this Family History there are assumptions made that are
based on circumstational information gathered from other researchers,
documents and books, however there is no specific information the we have found
or that has been offered by others to establish the name of Theophilus II's
wife or that John was his son or if Mary was his daughter.
We do believe that Theophilus Simonton was a child of Theophilus Simonton
and Mary Smith his wife. In Archbald Smith's Will of 1929, in Lewes Delaware
Archbald referred to his sister Mary and her "six" children as well as naming
Theophilus Simonton as Mary's husband. In the Archives of Pennsylvania, there
was found a will packet with the name of Theophilus Simonton dated 1750. This
will packet was and is empty. At that time according to professional Genealogist
a will packet is never prepared until after the will is filed after a person
dies, therefore this must have been a Theophilus other that the older person as
Theophilus Simonton I wrote his will in 1754 which was 4 years later
It is furthur believed that the "grandchild" named John in the Will of
Theophilus Simonton I was a son of Theophilus II and it is furthur supported by
the fact that in descendents of John, The name Theophilus and Adam was
used for at least 5 or 6 generations later. Adam was a name indicated to be
a brother of Mary, the wife of Theophilus I and probably one reason it was carried by
all of the other five children as well in naming of their children. There was an Adam Simonton in Ulster Ireland in 1666 so Adam is also a family name in the Simonton Family. Because of
the proximity of the Frame family when the original Simonton family lived in
Lewes Delaware, it is possible that the wife of Theophilus II was a Frame, and
thus the use of the Frame names as Grandchildren in the original Will of
Theophilus I and these were really his nephews and not his grand children. We also believe that a sister of Theophilus I married Robert Frame in Delaware and they had at least two children named Nathan and Smith as they both showed to inherit land in Delaware in 1640.This
is additionally explained in the section on Ann Simonton who married a Frame.
The Brothers and sisters of Theophilus II, being Robert, William, Ann, Mary,
and Magdalene are all very well documented as to their children and activities
in Rowan Co NC and in consideration of the probable dates of birth, that are
reasonable, we have arrived at a theory that "John" who was one of the
Grandchildren named in the Will of Theophilus, came to North Carolina with
Mary the widow and Son, William after the death of Theophilus in 1754. It is then further
assumed that this John married and had a family in Rowan Co while living with
the Uncles and Aunts. We furthur believe that there were at least two sons and
probably some daughters. We can then conclude that the names of these sons were
Adam and John and on the daughters we have no documentationl.
John's son, Adam established his family near the South Yadkin and Hunting Creek area
about 20 miles north of the area where the other Simontons had established
their residence in 1750. He lived near where the family of his wife had located
earlier. This was the Cooper family and land transactions also show these
facts. John the other Son of John very likely went to the land in South Carolina where Robert his
great uncle had received land south of the Catawba River on Allison Creek. This
is in the area where the Strong and Gaston families were also early settlers
which relates to who John married. Even though John did not carry the names of
Theophilus and Adam in his family, he did carry the name Robert John and
William which are also prominant in the Simonton Family.
Since there has been no definite information developed by the end of 2003 as to
whose children they were, the various connections shown are not proven and when
proof can be found, it is hoped it will find its way into this History.
